Course Description
This evidence-based course is designed for PTs, PTAs, OTs and OTAs that may encounter patients requiring wound care assessment and treatment. This course will provide clinicians with the latest information with regards to wound care management. This course will discuss the basics of wound care including information about their etiology, how to assess and document wounds appropriately, types of wounds and contributing factors, the phases of wound healing and prevention techniques, and treatment options.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Describe normal phases of wound healing
- Identify factors which lead to delayed wound healing
- Name the layers of skin
- Assess wounds and document appropriately
- Identify typical wound types
- Pressure
- Diabetic/Neuropathic
- Venous
- Arterial
- Understand atypical wounds and interventions needed
- Understand dressing selections available and what to use based on wound type
- Identify advanced wound healing techniques & modalities
Instructor – Jennifer Gardner, PT, DPT, MHA, CWS
Dr. Gardner has been a physical therapist for 23 years with the last 18 concentrated solely on wound care. She has been a Certified Wound Specialist since 2001. Most recently, Dr. Gardner was employed as a Clinical Affairs Manager with TRX BioSurgery who manufactures DermaPure, a next generation decellularized dermal allograft. However, starting March 1, 2021, she joined Integra, a company with many wound care products in their portfolio, including skin substitutes, as a Clinical Sales Specialist. In addition, she is an adjunct professor at Stockton University as well as the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, teaching Integumentary to doctoral physical therapy students. Dr. Gardner has presented both nationally and internationally on various wound care topics.
