Disorders of Consciousness (DoC) Rehabilitation: Introductory Strategies for Success
Course Description
Rehabilitation professionals play a critical role in the care of individuals with disorders of consciousness (DoC)—a population that has been historically overlooked and frequently misunderstood. Grounded in current evidence and framed by a commitment to equity in access and care, this course provides a foundational overview of the clinical, ethical, and practical considerations involved in supporting recovery after severe brain injury.
Participants will examine the pathophysiology and classification of DoC, identify common diagnostic challenges, and review validated assessment tools and introductory treatment strategies.
The aim of the course is to provide clinicians with actionable, evidence-based strategies, a renewed perspective on the potential for recovery, and the responsibility to advocate for individuals with profound neurological impairments across all levels of care.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology DoC
- Distinguish between the 3 types of DoC
- Describe the methods of medical management for individuals with DoC
- Identify assessment tools utilized to evaluation patients with DoC
- Create individualized treatment plans and set appropriate goals for individuals with DoC
