Foot and Ankle: Anatomy, Pathology, Biomechanics, and Treatment
Course Description
This comprehensive course on the foot and ankle will review common pathologies related to the foot and ankle complex that can have a negative impact on patient mobility and quality of life. It will include instruction in important aspects of a thorough evaluation of the foot and ankle complex to include gait analysis in order to determine the root causes of the issues. Evidence based treatment interventions such as manual therapy and taping techniques will also be demonstrated and treatment progressions will be discussed. This course will also include instruction in the role of footwear and the use of orthotics to improve patient outcomes.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Recognize the pertinent anatomy, kinesiology, and common pathologies of the foot and ankle complex
- Recognize the overall functional impact caused by common foot and ankle pathologies
- Explain how the gait cycle relates to the foot/ankle and associated movement and force requirements, as well as the impact on foot/ankle function and pathology
- Describe appropriate hand placement, technique, and grading of demonstrated mobilizations for foot/ankle complex
- Describe specific techniques for taping of the foot and ankle
- Summarize the role of footwear and orthotics and explain appropriate use
- Identify appropriate treatment progressions for the foot and ankle
