From Elbow to Fingertips: Clinical Management of the Upper Extremity
Course Description
This interactive 3.5-hour course provides allied health clinicians with a practical and clinically applicable approach to evaluation and treatment of the hand, wrist, and elbow. Participants will
explore the complex relationship between mobility, stability, neural dynamics, myofascial dysfunction, and functional movement throughout the upper extremity. The course is designed to bridge the gap between foundational anatomy and real-world clinical application by integrating orthopedic, neurological, biomechanical, and soft tissue considerations into upper
extremity rehabilitation strategies.
Topics will include functional anatomy and biomechanics of the hand, wrist, elbow, and forearm; common orthopedic and neurological diagnoses; regional interdependence within the upper
extremity; and the impact of proximal dysfunction on distal symptoms. Participants will review clinical concepts such as Double Crush Syndrome, neural irritation patterns, peripheral nerve
entrapments, myofascial trigger points, repetitive strain injuries, tendon dysfunction, grip-related impairments, and compensatory movement strategies affecting upper extremity performance.
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify key anatomical structures and functional biomechanics of the hand, wrist, and elbow relevant to clinical assessment and intervention.
- Differentiate common upper extremity orthopedic, neurological, and overuse conditions impacting the hand, wrist, and elbow.
- Demonstrate appropriate observational, palpation, range of motion, strength, and functional assessment techniques for the upper extremity.
- Apply evidence-informed intervention strategies to improve mobility, strength, coordination, pain management, and functional performance of the hand, wrist, and elbow.
- Analyze functional movement patterns and task performance to identify compensatory strategies, ergonomic concerns, and activity limitations affecting upper extremity function.
- Develop individualized treatment considerations and patient education strategies to support upper extremity recovery, injury prevention, and functional independence across clinical
settings.
