Gross, Fine, and Visual Perceptual Motor Supports for Handwriting Development
Course Description
This course will examine underlying motor issues that impact student acquisition of efficient, effective, and legible handwriting skills. Treatment strategies will be provided for therapist use, whether in direct therapy sessions or in consultation with parents and teachers.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify the underlying core control issues that can impact handwriting development
- Recognize the difference between efficient vs inefficient pencil grasp patterns
- List 3 exercises/activities that support motor requirements for handwriting success that could be done at home or in the classroom setting
- Identify visual perceptual motor difficulties that can impact handwriting success
- Recognize what types of adapted paper are best suited to different motor and/or spatial planning needs
- Create an individualized series of construct>>draw>>write tasks that reasonably begin at a student’s baseline skill level in order to track visual perceptual motor progress related to prewriting/handwriting development
