Myofascial Manual Therapy Strategies Using Mechanical Percussion Devices
Course Description
Myofascial compression interventions have become a popular treatment among rehabilitation professionals. This course will focus on the evidence and application of manual therapy using mechanical percussion devices. The latest research evidence, clinical standards, and treatment strategies will be discussed for these popular interventions along with video demonstrations of various methods that have been shown to be effective to deactivate soft tissue restrictions. Further evidence and examples of protocols to use percussion devices in the use of recovery will also be explored.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Explain at least one current scientific theory behind Instrument Assisted Soft-Tissue Massage (IASTM) and mechanical percussion devices.
- Recognize the applications of percussion therapy for improvements in recovery, range of motion, and strength / force production.
- Identify appropriate evidence-based techniques for the use of percussion therapy for individuals with musculoskeletal impairments.
- Summarize the emerging research regarding mechanical percussion devices and the latest research evidence for IASTM as a treatment intervention to improve performance and functional movement allowing the client to better engage in ADLs.
- Describe the role that the Percussion therapy potentially has on the Diffuse noxious inhibitory control (DNIC) pathway.
