Nutrition Supplements: Evaluating the Evidence Across Populations
Course Description
Navigating the crowded and heavily marketed supplement aisle can be challenging for consumers and healthcare professionals alike. This webinar provides an evidence-based overview of popular dietary supplements—including multivitamins, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and targeted performance aids—by evaluating current clinical research regarding their efficacy, safety, and necessity. Rather than taking a “one-size-fits-all” approach, this session examines how supplement requirements vary across distinct population groups.
Participants will gain practical frameworks to distinguish scientifically backed recommendations from marketing hype, assess potential nutrient-drug interactions, and apply a “food-first” approach while identifying when supplementation is clinically warranted.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Critique the Scientific Evidence: Analyze current peer-reviewed research and systematic reviews to distinguish between scientifically supported supplement protocols and unproven marketing claims.
- Discuss Population-Specific Interventions: Discuss evidence-based supplementation strategies to address distinct physiological needs, nutrient deficiencies, and life stages (e.g., pediatric, maternal, geriatric populations).
- Assess Risks, Interactions, and Safety Profiles: Identify potential nutrient-drug interactions, upper tolerable intake levels (UL), toxicity risks, and quality control issues inherent in third-party product testing and regulatory gaps.
- Apply a “Food-First” Assessment Framework: Determine when dietary intake alone is insufficient to meet nutritional targets and clinically evaluate when supplementation is warranted versus redundant.
- Deliver Client-Centered Risk Communication: Translate complex clinical data into clear, actionable advice to help clients and patients make informed choices about supplement efficacy, dosing, and safety.
