Prevention and Rehabilitation of Elbow Injuries in Competitive Overhead Athletes
Course Description
Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstructions have recently reached “epidemic” proportions at the professional level. In addition to surgical reconstruction, many non-operative injuries occur in competitive overhead athletes. Lecture format will be implemented to achieve the stated objectives. The instructor will provide an overarching review of the literature as it pertains to elbow injury epidemic in overhead athletes. Participants will be able to reflect on their current rehabilitation and return to play plan for elbow injuries and make appropriate modifications for future rehabilitation interactions.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Recognize the significant increase in incidence of elbow injuries in overhead athletes.
- Interpret guidelines to implement to reduce upper extremity injury risk in overhead athletes.
- Differentiate between specific exercises to implement during various stages of the rehabilitation program.
- Construct a return to play plan, including a return to throwing progression, based on functional criteria.
- Appraise the importance of a proactive approach with pre-season screening to decrease the risk of overuse upper extremity injuries.
