The Identification and Management of Oncology Treatment-Related Lymphedema
Course Description
This course will provide an overview of the identification and management of oncologic treatment-related lymphedema. It includes a review of the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system, discussion of the clinical presentation of lymphedema, risk factors and the effects of oncologic treatment on the development of lymphedema and differential diagnosis. It will also provide insight into current treatment options, as well as patient education and care guidelines. The content of this course will provide therapists with the information necessary to perform risk assessments for lymphedema and instruction in patient care guidelines. It will be relevant in aiding the therapist in the identification of lymphedema in the oncology patient population and more importantly, it will assist the therapist in determining when to refer the patient to a lymphedema specialist.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
1. Perform a risk assessment for lymphedema.
2. Instruct patient in care guidelines.
3. Identify lymphedema in the oncology patient population.
4. Determine when a referral to a lymphedema specialist is appropriate.
