3-Hour Ethics for the Physical Therapy Professional
Course Description
This 3-hour course titled “3-Hour Ethics for the Physical Therapy Professional” is designed to provide physical therapists and physical therapist assistants a comprehensive understanding of the ethical principles guiding healthcare. The course will cover topics such as how personal biases can be overcome to align with commonly agreed upon ethical principles, distinguishing between ethics and jurisprudence/law, recognizing the overlap of ethics and jurisprudence/law, defining key ethical principles guiding healthcare, the APTA Ethical Guidelines, and recognizing the impact of ethical violations by a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant, and comprehending and explaining the interplay of a patient’s right to informed consent with the principles of ethics.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Recognize how personal biases can be overcome to align with commonly agreed upon ethical principles, despite cultural/religious background.
- Summarize the difference between ethics and jurisprudence/law
- Recognize the overlap of ethics and jurisprudence/law
- Recall and utilize 11 key ethical principles guiding healthcare
- Recall the APTA national guidelines on ethics
- Recognize the impact of ethical violations by a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant
- Recognize the interplay of a patient’s right to informed consent with the principles of ethics
