Course Description
Breathing is one of the most basic functions of life, needed as a foundation for daily activities and mobility. When a patient needs artificial assistance to breath, our expertise as occupational and physical therapists can be used to improve patient outcomes. This lecture is for occupational and physical therapists wanting to expand knowledge to better treat patients who have artificial airways, typically in the acute care setting. This course debunks common myths about patients with artificial airways, describes the basics of artificial airways and mechanical ventilation, as well as provides treatment options to best improve outcomes in mechanically ventilated patients.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Accurately identify 3+ different types of artificial airways.
- Explain how to appropriately time therapy services for patients on mechanical ventilation
- Identify 3+ feasible activities for which patients with artificial airways can participate.
- Explain 2+ benefits of starting therapy early with patients who have artificial airways.
