Complicated Orthopedic Case Studies

Course Description

This webinar is intended to discuss rehabilitation involving patients with difficult and protracted recovery following surgery. Conditions to be discussed will be related to the following case studies:

• Recurrent anterior shoulder instability in an adolescent male basketball player
• Knee articular cartilage defect in a middle-aged female tennis player
• FAI and bilateral hip surgery in a 40-year-old female and
• ACL surgery with developing arthrofibrosis and cyclops lesion in a female 14-year-old high school soccer player

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

• Implement specific rehab interventions aimed at restoring function in patients struggling with pain, stiffness, and recurrent instability after surgery
• Utilize appropriate and modified loading strategies for the shoulder, hip and knee
• Use a multi-modal approach to treatment including manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and the assessment of psychosocial factors that impact return to activity
• Recognize key concepts of post-operative care for OATS procedure, Bankart, Remplissage and Laterjet procedures, arthroscopic vs open hip surgery for FAI, and managing ACL rehab after developing arthrofibrosis and a cyclops lesion
• Recall potential complications and discuss how to communicate and address these with the patient and physician
