Course Description

This course is an introduction to Developmental Care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It is relevant to PTs & OTs currently practicing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or considering practicing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This course will cover a history & evolution of the NICU, understanding neurobehavioral development from preterm through term, as well as, the latest research & evidence.

Explain the Synactive Theory of Development and related theories as well as their influence on developmental care

Mary E. Vanesko

Mary completed her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Bloomsburg University in 2005 & received her Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Temple University in 2007.

Mary has since worked in a variety of settings including inpatient acute adult rehab, inpatient pediatric rehab, adult acute care, pediatric intensive care unit, outpatient pediatrics, neonatal intensive care unit, early intervention and skilled nursing.

Mary found her niche as an inpatient neonatal therapist in 2010. She was previously a Lead Occupational Therapist at a level four, 40 bed neonatal unit. Mary has worked as a therapist in both inpatient and outpatient pediatrics, early intervention and pediatric inpatient rehab. She has collaborated on evidenced-based clinical research studies and has been a guest lecturer at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

In 2013 Mary began her career as a travel Occupational Therapist and has lived and practiced in five states, as well as worked in over 10 different facilities. Soon after she began her professional health care consultative services, as she realized there was a need for education specific to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Mary has recently completed consultative services at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale, California where she was the NICU subject matter expert and had a leadership role in the build and development of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Consultation included but was not limited to neuro-developmental documentation build, best practice policies and procedures, architectural design, and didactic training and education for the therapy & nursing staff. Mary is certified in Infant Massage and is a service provider for International Loving Touch Foundation, Inc. as an infant massage course instructor.

Mary also is a certified yoga instructor, health food junkie, loves animals, travel, the ocean and outdoors. She also currently teaches for her new startup company, Kulacore, in which she offers virtual online yoga classes.
