Differential Diagnosis & Current Strategies for Treatment of Upper Quadrant Entrapment

Course Description

Have you wondered why entrapment neuropathy patients don’t get well and don’t reach their functional goals? This course will provide information on ways to identify nerve compression injuries and differentiate the peripheral symptoms from central symptoms (central sensitization).  Often treating the peripheral symptoms is not enough to improve outcome if the dysfunction reveals central sensitization.  An overview of current evidence regarding the evaluation, treatment and management of peripheral and central symptoms called “bottom up” and “top down” treatment will be reviewed and discussed. This workshop will guide the participant through a systematic clinical examination of the upper quadrant from cervical radicular symptoms to distal nerve entrapments.

This course will be useful for beginning and experienced therapists as well as athletic trainers.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

• Identify the clinical differences between peripheral nerve and central nerve entrapment symptoms.
• Describe the symptoms for both “bottom up” and “top down” treatment.
• Develop an evidence based treatment program for treating nerve entrapment and double crush syndrome.
• Select the most appropriate clinical tests to differentiate musculoskeletal dysfunction from nerve entrapment dysfunction.
