Course Description

This course will define dementia, introduce dementia specific assessments to help establish the best plan of care, and describe treatment strategies based on level of cognitive deterioration.

At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

Discuss the pathology of dementia.
Categorize the stages of dementia.
Identify assessment tools used in the evaluation of patients with dementia.
Apply a systematic approach to the treatment of patients with dementia.

Lisa Alexander

PT, DPT, GCS, CCI

Dr. Alexander is currently the Director of Rehab for a skilled nursing facility in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where she manages a staff of 15 PT’s, PTA’s, OT’s, COTA’s, and SLP’s. She has worked in the SNF setting since 2007 as a director, supervising therapist, or evaluating therapist. She is passionate about healthcare policy and administration, physical therapy for cognitively impaired individuals, and quality assurance. Her current clinical focus is on development and implementation of functional based mobility protocols and outcome measures in SNF. She is currently Associate and Clinical Faculty for Mohave Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program, and Clinical Faculty for The University of Missouri and Midwestern University Doctor of Physical Therapy Programs.

Rhonda L. Schnabl

MPT, DPT, GCS

Rhonda is a licensed physical therapist with over 17 years of experience primarily in the ICU. Rhonda has a BS in Health Promotion and Wellness, a Masters in Exercise Science and a Masters and Doctorates in Physical Therapy. Throughout Rhonda’s career, she has had the opportunity to work with cardiopulmonary teams dedicated to working in the CVICU, CCU, MICU, SICU, open heart step down and coronary care step down units. In January of 2015, Rhonda was appointed by the APTA as a critical care content expert for the accreditation of critical care fellowships for physical therapists. She is currently employed with a skilled nursing facility in Arizona. Rhonda also serves as a clinical faculty member of Mohave Community College’s PTA program.
