Ethics and Jurisprudence for Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants in the State of Tennessee
Course Description
This 4-hour course titled “Ethics and Jurisprudence for Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants in the State of Tennessee” is designed to provide physical therapists and physical therapist assistants with a comprehensive understanding of the ethical principles guiding healthcare and the interplay of ethics and jurisprudence/law. The course will cover topics such as how personal biases can be overcome to align with commonly agreed upon ethical principles, distinguishing between ethics and jurisprudence/law, recognizing the overlap of ethics and jurisprudence/law, defining key ethical principles guiding healthcare, comparing the State of Tennessee ethical guidelines with the APTA national guidelines, recognizing the impact of ethical violations by a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant in the state of Tennessee, as well as comprehending and explaining the interplay of a patient’s right to informed consent with the principles of ethics.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Recognize how personal biases can be overcome to align with commonly agreed upon ethical principles, despite cultural/religious background.
- Summarize the difference between ethics and jurisprudence/law
- Recognize the overlap of ethics and jurisprudence/law
- Recall and utilize 11 key ethical principles guiding healthcare
- Recall the APTA national ethical guidelines to include the APTA Code of Ethics, the APTA Guide for Professional Conduct, APTA Standards for Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant and the APTA Guide for Conduct of the Physical Therapist Assistant
- Identify the General Rules Governing the Practice of Physical Therapy in the state of Tennessee (Official Compilation, Rules and Regulations, Chapter 1150-01)
- Recognize the Occupational and Physical Therapy Practice Act (Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 63, Chapter 13, Parts 1 and 3)
- Recognize the impact of ethical violations by a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant in the state of Tennessee
