Florida Laws, Rules and Ethics for Occupational Therapy
Course Description
This course is designed to meet the 2-hour laws and rules requirement for occupational therapy license renewal in the state of Florida. The roles of OTs are expanding within evolving healthcare and community settings. These changes require increased reliance on professional judgement and support systems to address novel ethical situations in addition to age old ethical dilemmas. Knowledge regarding state laws and rules is essential to navigating ethical and legal practice in Florida. This course will inform occupational therapists on applicable state legal codes and mandates and enable occupational therapists to navigate ethically challenging scenarios and create ethically supportive environments in order to decrease moral distress and improve professional outcomes.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Recognize and gain familiarity with resources on Florida State laws and statutes related to the profession of occupational therapy to include Chapter 456 and 468, Part III, F.S. and Division 64B11, F.A.C.
- Identify Core Principles of Ethics according to the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics
- Compare utilitarian, deontological, and virtue based ethical discernment styles
- Apply Ethical constructs and legal statutes to occupational therapy case-based scenarios
- Strategize opportunities to promote legal policy and ethical support in work settings
