Game On!—Video Games and Evidence-Based Practices for Rehabilitation Professionals
Course Description
This course will provide an overview of the current literature regarding use of video games in therapy practice. Video game playing will be discussed as both an occupation and as a means to performance skill development for clients. This course will provide an overview of current commercially available video game systems and games most applicable for performance skill development. Participants will apply knowledge of video games to case examples, identify barriers to implementation of video game interventions, and increase confidence in their ability to apply this knowledge in their clinical practice.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Summarize available evidence supporting the use of video games in therapeutic interventions.
- Describe the functional basis for video games in alignment with the scope occupational therapy and physical therapy practice promoting improvement in physical and cognitive abilities to enhance engagement in ADLs.
- Identify barriers to use of video games in clinical practice.
- Select video games that would be appropriate for use in clinical practice.
