Important Nutrition Points for Assisting an Athlete Diagnosed with an Eating Disorder: Recognition to Recovery
Course Description
For the diagnoses which fall under the category of eating disorders, these are very complex conditions which require a team to fully address all medical, psychological and nutritional impacts. In this course we will focus on the nutrition impacts for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of recognizing red flags, assessing nutrition status, and assisting long-term recovery. General energy balance will be reviewed, especially in light of the many physiological adaptions which can occur due to disordered eating behaviors. In addition, optimal nutrition practices for fueling sport as well as maintaining optimal health will be highlighted.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify the physiological aspects of energy restriction and the adaptations in the human body which impact health and performance.
- Define each type of disordered eating pattern and be able to recognize the red flags for each.
- Utilize evidence-based methods for assessing the potential risks for an eating disorder.
- Determine the appropriate transition of nutrition and calorie intakes for someone recovering from anorexia nervosa to minimize and avoid the risks inherent to the refeeding process for this population.
