Introduction to Performing Arts Rehabilitation: Setting the Stage
Course Description
Performing Arts Therapy is a combination of Occupational Health, Sports and Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Acute Injury Management. This course will present an overview of each discipline for the therapy student through professional. A barrier for most allied health professionals in treating this patient population is being able to speak their language and real-life examples of their movement patterns and positional demands will be explained in therapy terminology and context.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify and differentiate the various styles of performing arts, including dance, figure skating, cheer, gymnastics, music and adjunct performing arts disciplines.
- Recognize common performing arts terminology used to in describing movement patterns, equipment utilization, and environmental concerns to assist with assessment and treatment of the performing arts patient.
- Assess referral network and benefits of the collaborative team approach in providing care for performing arts patients.
- Interpret injury patterns common to specific performing arts disciplines based on body part and the interplay of extrinsic and intrinsic variables.
- Explain circumstances that increase the risk of overuse vs. acute injury patterns based on the performing art and their respective disciplines.
- Describe how “seasons of injury” and periodization plans may or may not be applicable to performing artists’ schedules and occupational demands.
