Occupational Justice in Stroke Rehabilitation: Advocating for the Human Right to Fully Participate in Life

Course Description

Occupational justice promotes the belief that individuals have the right to engage in occupations to sustain a healthy quality of life. For stroke survivors, the sudden change in functional abilities that occurs in context of neurological impairment, causes a disruption in one’s occupational identity–that is, one’s sense of self and relation to the world. In this course, we will review the occupational justice framework, and use it as a lens through which to analyze and contextualize the difficulties faced by stroke survivors. The aim of this course is to provide clinicians with an evidence-based method with which to approach assessment and treatment of stroke patients and drive outcomes, taking into consideration the intersectionality of all the various determinants of health, functioning, and well-being needed to support meaningful engagement in life’s occupations.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

• Identify tenets of occupational justice in relation to social, mental, and physical determinants of health in stroke patients
• Appreciate, synthesize, and apply tenets of occupational justice in stroke patients
• Plan and evaluate approaches to advance occupational rights and reduce injustices in stroke patients
