Pharmacology for the Rehab Clinician
Course Description
One of the challenges facing rehab professionals is the in-depth understanding of the patient’s medication profile. This presentation on medication management will include discussions on polypharmacy, compliance issues, and health tips to help improve patient understanding with compliance. We will review medication classifications actions and interaction of drugs commonly taken by the patient undergoing rehabilitation recognizing the influence of OTC medications, supplements, and food on therapeutic drug levels. The use of electronic medication platforms for identification of medications and interactions as a useful tool for the clinician will be introduced. The role of the rehab clinician for awareness of actions and interactions for the patient taking opioid based killers will be addressed. This course will use lecture with Power point slides, video tutorials of clinical drug actions with discussion of the clinical interactions with other drugs by identifying duplicate and antagonist medications including the role of OTC medications and supplements. Activities to identify and utilize electronic based apps to quickly identify unknown medications and interactions will be engaged.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Recognize and review best practices for medication management.
- Identify actions and interactions of medications commonly taken by the rehab patient.
- Summarize the risks of opioid based medications and why every provider should carry Narcan.
- Utilize electronic based apps for rapid medication identification and interaction information.
