Solving the Shoulder and Diaphragm Dilemma

Course Description

This course will cover the multifactorial components of examining and treating a patient with shoulder and/or diaphragm pain. Multifactorial components covered in this course include the relationship between shoulder pain and topics to include impingement, postural deficits, first rib mobility issues, decreased scapulothoracic mobility, glenohumeral mobility deficits, myofascial trigger points, referred pain from the diaphragm to the shoulder. Students will review case studies and choose appropriate contributing factors to the patient’s shoulder and/or diaphragm presentation. Students will discuss and identify appropriate evidence-based treatment based on clinical presentation.

At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

• Recognize and identify three frequent causes of shoulder pain as presented in the course material.
• Select two treatment choices based on the following criteria to resolve shoulder pain based on each of the following learning objectives topics: Shoulder pain due to impingement, shoulder pain due to decreased scapulothoracic mobility, shoulder pain and cervical spine pain.
• Describe the structure and function of the first rib in relation to cervical anatomy and headache presentation.
• Differentiate shoulder pain types based on case study presentations.
• Identify postural contributions to shoulder pain based on a review of anatomy and case study presentation.
• Describe the ability to analyze contributing factors in patient case studies where shoulder pain and or diaphragm symptoms are presented with one or more contributing factors.

  Satisfactory completion of this course will require the participant to complete a 20 question post-test with a minimum passing score of 70%.
