Stay Strong: Preventing and Treating Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia affects between 8% and 50% of adults over age 60 in communities throughout North America. It is annually responsible for a $19 billion burden on the healthcare industry. However, recent surveys reveal that the lay public and even healthcare practitioners are fairly unfamiliar with the condition and its effects on the human body.
This course will define and investigate the causes of sarcopenia. It will also instruct healthcare practitioners, particularly in the field of rehabilitation, how to screen for and treat sarcopenia. To further influence our community health & wellness, the course will also review how we can prevent sarcopenia, reducing its impact on the economy and healthcare system.
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
1.Explain what sarcopenia is and who it affects and how it can affect one’s ability to perform ADLs.
2.Recognize methods of testing patients for sarcopenia.
3.Identify risk factors for developing muscle atrophy.
4.Prescribe a therapeutic exercise program that effectively treats sarcopenia.
5.Summarize how to educate patients on the nutritional components for treating sarcopenia.
6.Utilize evidence-based methods to make therapeutic interventions the most effective in preventing and treating sarcopenia.
