The Role of Physical Therapy in the Hospitalized Pediatric Patient: Zero to Three Years Old
Course Description
The physical therapy evaluation and treatment of the hospitalized child, who is zero to three years old requires some special considerations. There are psychological, physical, social and emotional issues unique to young children that require consideration to effectively help prevent the known negative side effects of hospitalization. This course will begin by describing the evaluation of zero to three-year old children with attention to common precautions and hospital acquired dysfunctions which physical therapy can help prevent. It will then discuss the goals of physical therapy and important considerations for discharge planning for this population. The following patient populations will be covered: cardiosurgical patients, medically complex patients with respiratory illness, trauma patients, and orthopedic surgery patients in the pediatric intensive care unit through general care and discharge from the hospital. This course will not cover hematology/oncology patients or the evaluation and treatment of premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit as these topics deserve separate courses.
