Course Description

Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) is the most common outcome of non-catastrophic motor vehicle accidents (MVA) and up to 50% of those with WAD from a MVA will continue to report interference with daily life up to 12 months post injury. Massage therapists can play an important role in the recovery process as massage therapy has been proven to be beneficial in those with chronic neck pain.

This course will review some of the common clinical findings found in whiplash to include pain and trigger points. The participant will learn a traditional approach to include how to work with the cervical spine musculature including the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid. It will also include an alternative approach for the more complex client incorporating the structures of the platysma and nuchal ligament to increase function and range of motions of the neck and cervical spine while reducing pain and inflammation at the same time.

The participant will learn how to work with areas of scar tissue formation that occurred on these structures for the whiplash injury to heal. Video lectures on whiplash dynamics are accompanied by videos for anatomical and hands-on applications.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

Explain how whiplash occurs and how the whiplash force also impacts the platysma and nuchal ligament along with the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles.
List the contraindications for massage in clients following whiplash.
Identify the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles and demonstrate how to correctly apply massage to these tissues following whiplash.
Identify the platysma and nuchal ligament and learn how to correctly apply massage to these tissues in injury patterns.

Amy Bradley Radford has been a Massage Therapist for almost 30 years. She graduated from the Utah College of Massage Therapy, in 1993, became Nationally Certified in 1998 and Board Certified in 2014.

She is the owner of PPS Seminars (Pain Patterns & Solutions) which hosts live training as well as offering a full online training center for massage therapists to learn advanced pain management. She is also the owner of Massage Business Methods and Maximize Your Massage Business Coaching and is a regular contributor with Massage Magazine on business related topics

Amy believes that to be a successful massage therapist, you must be well rounded in training both in business and hands on skills. Both sides of this training are available inside the online training facility, and they offer a wide variety of options for training from how to run a massage business to customer service, understanding client expectations and even pain management for difficult client body issues.

Amy has been an educator for over 27 years with three different facilities, most recently as the co-owner and Director of Education at The College of Massage Therapy inside Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot, Idaho. She retired from that position in 2007 to pursue teaching, writing, and to develop Pain Patterns & Solutions, Advanced Pain Management Techniques (PPS Seminars) full-time.
