Thoracic Spine as a Critical Biomechanical Link
Course Description
By acknowledging the biomechanical and functional role of the thoracic spine in neck, shoulder/back and hip dysfunctions, more insightful evaluations and better treatment options can be realized. Thoracic spine contributions can significantly impact the upper extremity and lower extremity along with the upper and lower spine. Improving the mobility and functional stability of the thoracic spine as part of the POC, can enhance outcomes and patient performance. Rather than isolating the evaluation and treatment to focal areas of pain, much of the research has brought a broader concept to our collective understanding, a concept known as regional interdependence. Recent focus on the influence of the thoracic spine on regions of the body adjacent to it, such as the neck and shoulder/back and hip support this theory that seemingly unrelated impairments in a remote anatomical region may contribute to, or be associated with, the patient’s primary complaint.
This course aims to incorporate the potential advantages of regional interdependence on evaluation and treatment of neck and shoulder/back and hip dysfunction by including effective evaluation and treatment of the thoracic spine. Discussion, evaluation and treatment approaches to improve results outcomes will be provided in this lecture.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify the anatomy of the thoracic spine and surrounding musculature
- Discuss the biomechanics associated with the influence of LE posture and UE movement by the thoracic spine.
- Discuss the importance of examining and treating globally.
- Describe the potential contributors of the thoracic spine on the UE and LE.
- Identify the importance of regional interdependence in treating UE and LE dysfunctions
- Consider treatment approaches that the thoracic spine has as a critical biomechanical link.
