Understanding and Managing Reflux/GERD in Typically Developing Babies and Older Children with Medical Complexities
Course Description
This course seeks to help PTs/PTAs, OTs/OTAs, and caregivers understand gastro-esophageal reflux in normal development and for children with medical complexities. A thorough review of anatomy, common cultural practices, the need for and consequences of medical interventions, long-term consequences of uncontrolled reflux, how therapists can educate families in simple techniques to assist caregivers who have concerns or know when more aggressive intervention is needed for children who experience regular gastro-esophageal (GE) reflux.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Describe and define GER/GERD
- Describe normal anatomy related to development
- Explain common medical interventions for infants with medical complexities
- Explain the impact of reflux on development, feeding, and growth
- Summarize treatments for reflux including non-pharmaceutical, pharmaceutical & surgical
- Define the role of therapists: tricks and techniques that can help
