Using Knowledge of the Nervous System to Improve the Practice of Massage Therapy: An Introduction
Course Description
According to the CDC an estimated 51 million adult Americans experienced chronic pain in 2021. Chronic pain can be debilitating, impacting a person’s ability to perform their activities of daily living. It is also linked to depression as well as substance use and abuse. Research has shown that massage therapy is an effective tool for pain management. Therefore, massage therapists must be knowledgeable about the nervous system and its role in detecting and interpreting pain. This course is part one of a three-part series on the nervous system and its relationship to pain, designed to help massage therapists use their enhanced understanding to positively impact clients experiencing pain. This introductory course will help therapists to develop and understanding of the internal pain control system and how the central nervous system generates pain.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Recall the four components of pain processing in the central nervous system: transduction, transmission, modulation, and perception.
- Differentiate between the four types of pain: acute, chronic, neuropathic, and nociceptive.
- Explain the four main functions of the nervous system in relation to sensory information: reception of general sensory information (e.g., pain, touch, pressure, temperature, vibration), receiving special sensations (e.g., taste, smell, vision, sounds), integration and processing of sensory information, and response generation
